Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms, or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach.
Heartburn is the major symptom of acid in the esophagus, characterised by a burning discomfort behind the breastbone (sternum). Findings in GERD include esophagitis, strictures, dysphagia, and chronic chest pain.
In the case of GERD, the increase in the circulation to the abdomen normalises muscular movement to ease reflux, and the normalisation of gastric secretions enhances the digestive process, to resolve feelings of heartburn. Stimulations of acupuncture points calm the nervous system through increases in the production of opiate like substances. It also normalises dopamine and serotonin output. From a Chinese medical perspective, the goal is always to balance the energy of the organs, and to move any stagnation in the circulation of blood and qi. The unobstructed flow of liver energy is critical to resolving the sensations of heartburn and bloating, while regulation of the stomach and liver qi helps to normalise pylorus movement.
In addition to the traditional Chinese Medical treatment of GERD, it is my experience that diet and exercise certainly play a significant role. Perhaps most important is some type of regular relaxation regimen, whether that is yoga, meditation, Tai Chi or a Qi Gong program.
